Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Lash Parts Of J&K; Ramban Administration Issues Safety Alert

Jammu, Aug 23: Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning lashed several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, prompting district administrations to issue safety advisories amid the possibility of weather-related incidents.

In Ramban district, intense showers and lightning were reported from several areas. As a precaution, the district administration advised residents, particularly those living in higher reaches and near rivers, streams and other water bodies, to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions.

Rain also lashed several parts of neighbouring Udhampur district, bringing down temperatures and resulting in wet conditions across the region.

Widespread rainfall and overcast skies led to a noticeable fall in temperatures in both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions, with humidity levels remaining high.

Srinagar recorded a temperature of 16.2 degrees Celsius, while Jammu city registered 22.4 degrees Celsius. Both places witnessed significant rainfall, with precipitation levels reported at 100 per cent in Srinagar and 98 per cent in Jammu.

Among other major weather stations, Gulmarg recorded the lowest temperature in the region at 10.6 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam registered 14.2 degrees Celsius with 96 per cent rainfall.

In the Jammu division, Katra recorded 20.8 degrees Celsius with 95 per cent rainfall, Banihal 17.4 degrees Celsius with 93 per cent showers, while Kupwara recorded 17 degrees Celsius under cloudy conditions.

According to the five-day forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall activity is expected to gradually decline in the coming days, with scattered light showers likely over parts of southern and eastern districts, including Ramban, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar and Anantnag.

However, the weather department has warned of isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph during the period.

The IMD has also cautioned about the possibility of localised flash floods, landslides and mudslides in vulnerable hilly areas, urging residents and travellers to remain vigilant and follow advisories issued by local authorities.
