Heavy Rain, Flash Flood Risk In J&K From July 18; MeT Issues Advisory
Srinagar, July 14: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has issued a weather advisory forecasting a major shift in weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir from July 18, with chances of heavy rainfall and flash floods in vulnerable areas. According to the MeT department, the weather will remain mostly hot and humid until July 17, with isolated areas receiving brief spells of rain and thunderstorms. The weather is expected to deteriorate from July 18, with partly to generally cloudy skies and light to moderate rainfall at many places. Isolated areas of the Jammu division may witness intense spells of heavy rain. The wet spell is likely to intensify between July 20 and 22, with the peak rainfall activity expected on July 21. During this period, isolated locations in both Jammu and Kashmir divisions may experience heavy showers and thunderstorms. Another spell of rain and thunder showers is likely across many parts of the Union Territory on July 23, the weather department said. The MeT centre warned of the possibility of heavy rainfall and intense showers during late night hours of July 18, morning of July 19, and between July 20-22, especially during late afternoon, night and early morning periods. Authorities cautioned that the rainfall may trigger flash floods, landslides and mudslides in vulnerable areas, particularly in the Chenab Valley, Pir Panjal region and hilly areas of Kashmir division. Residents have been advised to remain alert, avoid approaching rivers, streams and nallas, and take precautions against possible waterlogging in low-lying areas.
