NEW DELHI, Aug 17: The Congress on Monday criticised the government over the National Testing Agency’s decision to conduct a retest for three papers of the UGC-NET June 2026 examination, questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s accountability for the lapses.
Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said the NTA, nearly two months after the examination, had acknowledged errors in the question papers for English, Commerce and Sociology.
Ramesh said the NTA’s committee identified several factual, typographical and translation errors in the papers, including misspelling of names of prominent scholars, distorted book titles, language and grammatical mistakes, punctuation errors and the use of non-standard terminology for established concepts.
He further claimed that the committee found a significant number of questions had been repeated from previous examinations.
“Will the Prime Minister say anything about his own responsibility?” Ramesh asked, asserting that candidates should not have to bear the consequences of shortcomings in the examination system.
The Congress leader said the country’s youth deserved answers from the government over the repeated issues affecting competitive and eligibility examinations.
