Anurag Kumar assumes charge as Delhi Police Commissioner
New Delhi, Jul 17: Former Intelligence Bureau special director Anurag Kumar on Friday took charge as Delhi’s new police commissioner.
The 1994-batch IPS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre succeeds Satish Golcha who had been leading Delhi Police since August 22, 2025.
Kumar’s return to his parent cadre was cleared on Thursday by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“With the approval of the Competent Authority, Anurag Kumar, IPS (AGMUT:1994) is hereby appointed as Commissioner of Police, Delhi with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders,” the government order stated.
Kumar, an engineering graduate, supersedes three officers — Garima Bhatnagar and Rajesh Khurana (both 1992 batch) and Robin Hibu (1993 batch) — to become Delhi’s top cop. All three as special commissioners of police in Delhi Police.

During his two decade stint in the Intelligence Bureau, Kumar handled several strategic desks, including Kashmir, VIP security and Naxals. He has also served at the Indian mission in Washington.
Kumar, who was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016, worked in close coordination with other security agencies to dismantle terror networks and break the backbone of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
His primary focus will be on fortifying the city’s security architecture and maintaining law and order in the national capital, curbing organised crime, tackling the rising threat of cybercrime and enhancing counter-terrorism preparedness remain at the top of his agenda, they said.
The new commissioner will also prioritise strengthening women’s safety initiatives and ensuring seamless VIP security management across the capital.
Outgoing chief Satish Golcha, a 1992-batch AGMUT cadre officer who took over as Delhi police commissioner following as director general of Tihar Jail, has been directed to report to the lieutenant governor for his next posting. He is scheduled to retire in April next year.
