Anna Hazare Hospitalised in Mumbai Over Renal Infection

Mumbai, Sept 1: Veteran social activist Anna Hazare has been admitted to a hospital in Mumbai after blood tests indicated a renal infection, his associate said on Tuesday.

Hazare, 89, was shifted to Bombay Hospital in south Mumbai on Monday night from a medical facility in his native Ralegan Siddhi village in Ahilyanagar district, where he had initially received treatment.

“According to Anna’s blood reports, he had a renal infection, but he is doing fine now,” his aide Datta Awari said.

Awari said Hazare had been admitted to a hospital in Ahilyanagar last week and had subsequently recovered. Doctors at Bombay Hospital are conducting a detailed assessment of his condition.

The former Army soldier-turned-social activist has led several movements over the years advocating rural development, greater transparency in governance and stronger measures against corruption.

Hazare rose to national prominence during the 2011 anti-corruption movement, when his 13-day hunger strike in New Delhi drew widespread public support and intensified demands for a stronger Lokpal law.

He is also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, the country's third-highest civilian honour.
