New Delhi, Sep 14: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday directed officials to complete the construction of a grand Chhath Ghat on the Munak Canal stretch near Inderlok metro station within timeline.
Gupta along with senior officers of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FC) visited the spot for inspection where directions were given.
"The Munak Canal is being prepared ahead of Chhath Mahaparv so that devotees can offer Arghya in a clean, peaceful and dignified setting. A stretch that had long remained neglected is now being restored with better civic facilities," Gupta said.
The I&FC is has taken up work to rejuvenate and beautify the dry stretch of the Munak Canal between the downstream side of the Outer Ring Road and Inderlok Metro station at the estimated cost of Rs 42 crore.
From the Outer Ring Road to Inderlok Metro Station, a precast concrete boundary wall along with comprehensive beautification works will be undertaken along the canal. The government has plans to construct several other Chhath ghats across the city for public.
According to the plan, under this project, the canal will be comprehensively cleaned, with accumulated sludge and waste removed and arrangements made to ensure the flow of clean water.
"Modern Chhath ghats with concrete steps will be constructed on both sides of the canal. In addition, trees, plants and landscaped parks will be developed along the banks, transforming the area into a well-equipped space for worship and community activities," an official said.
According to officials, the project will include boundary walls, greenery, seating arrangements, lighting and aesthetic enhancements along a five kilometre long stretch of the Munak Canal.
"Once completed, more than 30,000 people are expected to visit the area daily for walks and recreational activities," officials added.
Delhi government has announced several initiatives with regard to Munak Canal, including an elevated road corridor and service roads on both sides of the canal, which will provide connectivity to several areas including, Shalimar Bagh, Pitampura, Keshavpuram, Netaji Subhash Place, Punjabi Bagh and nearby areas.
