PM Jan Dhan Yojana Has Had Transformative Impact: PM Modi

New Delhi, Aug 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has had an "unparalleled impact" and delivered transformative outcomes, as the flagship financial inclusion scheme completed 12 years.

Launched by Modi on August 28, 2014, PMJDY has played a major role in expanding access to formal banking services across the country and has emerged as one of the world's largest financial inclusion initiatives.

"Unprecedented scale and transformative outcomes! Jan Dhan Yojana has had an unparalleled impact," Modi said in a post on X, sharing a post by MyGov India.

Under the scheme, unbanked adults can open basic bank accounts without maintaining a minimum balance or paying maintenance charges. Account holders are provided RuPay debit cards carrying accident insurance cover of up to Rs 2 lakh.

The scheme also provides an overdraft facility of up to Rs 10,000 to eligible account holders, offering financial support during emergencies.

According to MyGov India, the number of Jan Dhan accounts has increased from 14.7 crore in 2015 to around 59 crore in 2026, significantly expanding access to formal banking services.

The government platform said financial inclusion has also increased among women, with nearly 33 crore women holding Jan Dhan accounts, accounting for around 56 per cent of all such account holders.

Rural and semi-urban areas have also seen substantial expansion in banking access. Around 46 crore Jan Dhan accounts are held in these areas, representing nearly 78 per cent of the total accounts.

MyGov India said the scheme has helped extend formal banking services to communities beyond major cities, strengthening participation in the formal economy and improving financial inclusion at the household and community levels.

The initiative has also contributed to wider access to digital financial services and government welfare transfers, making bank accounts an important part of citizens' financial identity.
