SRINAGAR, Aug 21: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a ₹25.87-crore state-of-the-art mechanized sheep and goat abattoir at Allochi Bagh in Srinagar, marking a major step towards modernising meat-processing infrastructure in the city.
The facility, being constructed under CAPEX/SASCI on an EPC mode, will have a processing capacity of around 5,000 sheep and goats per day, making it one of the largest dedicated mechanized sheep and goat abattoirs in the country.
The proposed facility will feature modern systems for slaughtering, carcass handling, processing, chilling, cold storage, sanitation, by-product management and other allied operations.
Omar Abdullah said the project would help bring Srinagar’s meat-processing infrastructure in line with contemporary standards and strengthen hygiene, food safety and scientific management.
Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation Fazl ul Haseeb briefed the Chief Minister on the project, stating that the facility aims to improve meat hygiene and food safety, provide safer working conditions, strengthen veterinary and quality-control mechanisms and establish a regulated and efficient slaughtering system.
The abattoir will also incorporate environmental safeguards, including a bio-digestion system and an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) for scientific treatment of organic waste and wastewater.
The systems are expected to reduce organic pollution, control foul odour, facilitate resource recovery and enable the reuse of treated water for suitable non-potable purposes.
Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, Rajya Sabha MP Gurwinder Singh Oberoi, Lal Chowk MLA Sheikh Ahsan Ahmed, Commissioner SMC Fazl ul Haseeb and other senior officers were present on the occasion.
The project is envisaged as a significant urban infrastructure initiative that will introduce modern standards of hygiene, food safety, animal handling, waste management and environmental protection to Srinagar’s meat-processing sector.
