Lok Sabha Passes Taxation Bill Amid Opposition Protests

Lok Sabha Passes Taxation Bill Amid Opposition Protests
NEW DELHI, Aug 6: The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill without any debate as persistent protests and sloganeering by Opposition members disrupted proceedings over issues including the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The legislation was cleared by the House amid the din, following which the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day. The Bill also amends the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, with the government stating that the changes are aimed at attracting greater foreign investment, boosting domestic electronics manufacturing, and facilitating the use of Indian data centres by global cloud service providers through enhanced regulatory and process certainty. The government has said the amendments are intended to strengthen India’s digital economy by creating a more predictable regulatory framework for investors and technology companies.
