LG Saxena Reconstitutes Ladakh State Board for Wildlife

Leh, Jul 29: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved the reconstitution of the State Board for Wildlife (SBWL) in the Union Territory of Ladakh by nominating eminent conservationists, ecologists, environmentalists and representatives of non-governmental organisations engaged in wildlife conservation. The Board has been reconstituted following the completion of the one-year tenure of the existing nominated members on May 29, 2026, to ensure its continued functioning. The State Board for Wildlife is the apex statutory body in Ladakh for matters related to wildlife conservation and biodiversity management. Constituted under Section 6 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, it advises the administration on wildlife protection policies, reviews conservation programmes, recommends measures for safeguarding habitats and endangered species, promotes coexistence between wildlife and local communities, and examines proposals concerning protected areas in accordance with the law. The Board also plays a key role in balancing developmental activities with ecological sustainability, particularly in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region. Welcoming the reconstitution, Lieutenant Governor Saxena said the revamped Board would strengthen wildlife conservation in Ladakh through scientific guidance, stakeholder participation and coordinated efforts to protect the region's unique biodiversity. "Ladakh is home to some of India's most distinctive wildlife species and one of the world's most fragile mountain ecosystems. The State Board for Wildlife plays a crucial role in shaping conservation policies, protecting biodiversity and ensuring that development progresses in harmony with nature. The inclusion of experienced experts, scientists, conservationists and civil society representatives will promote evidence-based decision-making and reinforce our commitment to preserving Ladakh's natural heritage for future generations," he said.
