LG Saxena launches Census 2027 self-enumeration phase in Ladakh

Leh/Jammu: Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena on Monday launched the second phase of the population self-enumeration for Census 2027 in the Union Territory by completing his enumeration in Leh.

Digital self-enumeration for Census 2027, which began on Monday in snowbound areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, will continue till August 31, officials said.

Saxena said Ladakh would be the first Union Territory in the country to complete Phase-II of the Census as the region remains completely snow-bound during winters.

The reference date for population enumeration in Ladakh is October 1, 2026, they said.

The self-enumeration window will be open from August 17 to 31, allowing citizens to record their details online.

"This process is not merely statistical; it is a national endeavour that would lay the foundation for informed governance, equitable resource distribution, and inclusive development," Saxena said.

He appealed to all Ladakh residents to participate in the exercise to ensure that the region's unique identity, aspirations and needs are reflected in the national database.

Amit Sharma , the Chief Principal Census Officer and Director Census Operations and Citizen Registration, said the exercise will allow residents to digitally provide their details ahead of the door-to-door Population Enumeration scheduled to take place from September 1 to 30.

"We are fully prepared. This is the most important round of the Census, which we call Population Enumeration. In this, we get the complete figures and different parameters," Sharma said.
