Jaishankar To Launch India’s UNSC Campaign For 2028-29 Term, Meet UN Chief Guterres In New York
New Delhi, July 11: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will launch India’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term during his visit to New York next week. Jaishankar is scheduled to unveil India’s official UNSC campaign at a special event at the UN headquarters on Monday and will also hold a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The External Affairs Minister, who recently concluded his visit to Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman, is expected to travel to the US before heading to Brussels for the third India-EU Trade and Technology Council meeting on July 14-15. India last served as a non-permanent member of the UNSC during the 2021-22 term. Elections for the 2028-29 tenure will be held in June next year, with India and Tajikistan competing for the Asia-Pacific Group’s single seat. India’s UNSC campaign carries the theme “#India4UNSC 2028-29: Peace, Planet, Progress”, highlighting its vision for greater representation and reforms in global governance. New Delhi has repeatedly called for comprehensive reforms of the UN Security Council, including expansion of both permanent and non-permanent categories, arguing that the current structure does not reflect today’s geopolitical realities. The campaign comes amid major global challenges, including conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and tensions in West Asia. India has maintained that reforms in the Security Council are essential to ensure fair representation for developing nations and a more effective multilateral system.
