ITR Filings for AY 2026-27 Cross 7.8 Crore, Set New Record

New Delhi, Sept 1: More than 7.8 crore income tax returns (ITRs) were filed for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 by August 31, setting a new record, the Income Tax Department said on Tuesday.

The department said the figure surpassed the 7.3 crore returns filed by September 16, 2025, the extended deadline for non-audit taxpayers for AY 2025-26.

In a post on X, the Income Tax Department said over 7.8 crore ITRs had been filed as of August 31, 2026. Of these, more than 5.9 crore ITR-1 and ITR-2 returns were filed by the July 31 deadline.

August 31 was the deadline for taxpayers having business or professional income who were not required to get their accounts audited. Such taxpayers could file applicable returns including ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5 or ITR-7.

ITR-3 is applicable to individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) earning income from a proprietary business or profession, while ITR-4 is a simplified return for eligible small and medium taxpayers.

ITR-5 is used by firms, Limited Liability Partnerships and cooperative societies, ITR-6 by companies registered under the Companies Act, and ITR-7 by trusts and charitable institutions.
