NEW DELHI, SEPT 17: India has reiterated its commitment to ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion people, saying it will continue to diversify its sources of energy in response to changing global market conditions.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) made the statement after the US House of Representatives passed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which could allow the US President to impose sanctions on Russia and tariffs on countries, including India and China, that continue to purchase Russian energy.
“As stated on several earlier occasions, India remains firmly committed to ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion people,” the MEA said.
The ministry added that India would pursue this objective through diversified sourcing and in line with evolving market dynamics.
According to the MEA, the issue has been discussed at senior levels with various US interlocutors over the past several months. India has also conveyed its concerns regarding the potential impact of the proposed measures on India-US bilateral relations as well as international energy markets.
The ministry said India has made clear its determination to take all necessary measures to safeguard its trade and economic interests.
The Government will also work closely with Indian trade and industry organisations to assess and address the possible implications of the developments, the MEA said.
The US House passed the sanctions legislation on September 16 by a 262-159 vote, sending it to President Donald Trump after the Senate had already approved the measure. The legislation provides for expanded sanctions on Russia and potential tariffs of up to 100% on countries buying Russian energy.
