NEW DELHI, Aug 7: India and China reviewed the overall situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and discussed key issues relating to boundary delimitation, border management and trans-border cooperation during diplomatic talks held in New Delhi, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.
The discussions took place under the framework of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China Border Affairs, a day after the two sides met in the national capital.
In a statement, the MEA said both countries held frank and constructive discussions and reviewed the prevailing situation along the LAC.
The two sides emphasised that maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas remains essential for the overall development of bilateral relations.
They agreed to continue using existing diplomatic and military channels, including the WMCC, local commander-level meetings and other established mechanisms, to address outstanding issues and prevent misunderstandings or miscalculations along the border.
The MEA said the meeting also followed up on the outcomes of the latest Special Representatives’ talks, with both sides holding detailed exchanges on boundary delimitation, border management, confidence-building mechanisms and trans-border cooperation.
During the talks, India reiterated the need for an early meeting of the expert-level mechanism on trans-border rivers and stressed the importance of timely sharing of technical information regarding upstream projects.
The Indian delegation was led by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the Ministry of External Affairs, while the Chinese side was headed by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of China’s Foreign Ministry.
