LEH, Sept 25: The Union Territory of Ladakh Administration and the Indian Institute of Management Jammu (IIM Jammu) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish an IIM Jammu Satellite Campus in Leh, in a move aimed at expanding access to quality management education for students in the region.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.
The new satellite campus will initially offer a four-year BBA (Hons.) programme with an intake of 60 students. The programme is scheduled to begin by the end of October 2026.
Officials said infrastructure for the satellite campus has been developed within around two months, allowing the academic programme to commence soon after the signing of the MoU.
The proposed programme has already received significant interest, with around 600 candidates expressing interest for the 60 available seats.
Speaking on the occasion, LG Vinai Kumar Saxena said the campus would go beyond providing undergraduate education and could develop into a centre for knowledge, innovation, entrepreneurship and professional development in Ladakh.
He described the establishment of the IIM Jammu Satellite Campus as an important development for the higher education sector in Ladakh and said it would create new academic and professional opportunities for local youth.
The initiative is also aimed at reducing the difficulties faced by students from Ladakh who have traditionally had to move outside the Union Territory to pursue specialised management and professional education.
Students and their families often face substantial expenses related to travel, accommodation, food, books and other requirements when studying outside Ladakh. These costs can be particularly challenging for students from remote areas and families with limited financial resources.
The Lieutenant Governor said that bringing quality management education closer to students in Ladakh would help reduce these barriers and enable more young people to pursue higher education and professional opportunities without having to leave the Union Territory.
The Administration said the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen higher education, develop local talent and create an ecosystem that supports skills, entrepreneurship and employment opportunities in Ladakh.
