Lucknow, Sep 14: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday said the greatest strength of democracy lies in the trust an ordinary citizen places in any constitutional institution.
Good governance also depends on public trust, he said, underlining, "If there is no public trust, we cannot achieve the goal of good governance.
"To attain those goals, it is essential that even the person at the very last rung of the social ladder can look up to various constitutional bodies with a sense of pride and trust," Adityanath said.
Speaking at the 50th foundation day celebration of the Uttar Pradesh Lokayukta here, he said, "The greatest strength of democracy lies in the trust an ordinary citizen places in any constitutional institution. In a democracy, nothing can stop an organisation from moving forward or lower its importance if that lives up to the trust of the common people."
Citing the example of transformation in the Public Distribution System (PDS) meant for food grain distribution, Adityanath said when he became the chief minister in 2017, the highest number of complaints were related to food grain distribution under the PDS.
Sixty out of 100 people used to complain about the PDS, he said.
"We installed ePOS machines and linked them to a central monitoring screen at headquarters. If anyone attempted to divert rations at any of the 80,000 fair price shops, the system will alert us, leaving zero possibility for malpractice. The result? Today, when 500 people come to see me, not a single one has a complaint regarding the PDS. There are zero complaints," he said.
