New Delhi: BJP president Nitin Nabin on Sunday accused the Congress of showing disrespect to the national song Vande Mataram to serve its “dirty politics of appeasement”.
In a series of posts on X, Nabin also alleged that senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's “objection” to the singing of the full version of the national song at an Independence Day event at the party's office on Saturday reflected Congress’ “distorted thinking”.
It has once again been proved that even after eight decades of Independence, the Congress has no respect for Vande Mataram, the BJP chief alleged.
“When the national song was being sung at the Congress headquarters, Sonia Gandhi signalled to stop it. This was no coincidence, but the bitter truth of Congress' distorted thinking,” Nabin said on X
The BJP president said the Congress government in Kerala also “crossed all limits” by completely removing Vande Mataram from its Independence Day celebrations.
“Bowing down to hardliners has become a permanent policy of the Congress. For the sake of the dirty politics of appeasement, they have insulted thousands of freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country with this very song on their lips,” Nabin said.
“This is not merely an incident of stopping a song. Rather, it is a sign of that dynastic arrogance under which the Congress harbours an aversion to everything that makes this nation proud,” Nabin claimed.
He also said that the people of the country have “well understood” how much the Congress is connected to “Indianness”, given that it becomes “uncomfortable” with the singing of Vande Mataram.
Several BJP leaders on Sunday alleged that the top Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, showed “utter disrespect” towards Vande Mataram when it was being sung at the party's Independence Day event, and demanded an apology from them.
They also accused Sonia Gandhi of objecting to the singing of the full version of the national song, a charge that the Congress denied, claiming that no such attempt was made and that Sonia Gandhi was only asking for a chair for party chief Kharge as he was standing for a while.
