Cloudburst Triggers Flash Floods In Anantnag’s Chittergul, Farmers Seek Compensation For Losses
Anantnag, Jul 12: A cloudburst in the Nala Chotihall area of Chittergul in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district triggered flash floods on Sunday, causing significant damage to agricultural fields, orchards and residential areas. Following the incident, district administration teams reached the affected areas to assess the damage and initiate relief and preventive measures. Residents reported that floodwaters entered homes, damaged paddy fields and affected apple orchards, leaving farmers facing heavy losses. They urged the government to conduct an immediate assessment and provide compensation for damaged crops and trees. Locals said the sudden surge of water caused panic among residents, with several families forced to leave their homes during the night. Water also entered a local mosque and disrupted normal life in the area. Residents said the cloudburst occurred around 7 pm, with water flowing down from the mountains and diverting a local stream, leading to widespread destruction of farmland, horticulture areas and houses. They also reported damage to roads, including the route connecting the affected areas, affecting movement and connectivity. The administration has deployed emergency teams to Chittergul and nearby areas to evaluate the situation and take necessary action. Residents have requested a physical assessment of losses and immediate relief assistance for affected farmers and families.
