LONDON, Aug 17: At least two people were killed and 13 workers and contractors injured after a Russian strike hit the ArcelorMittal steel plant in Ukraine’s Kryvyi Rih, partially disrupting operations at the country’s largest steelworks.
According to reports, the strike on Sunday damaged key energy and blast furnace facilities at the plant, which is owned by ArcelorMittal and Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.
Ukraine’s English-language Kyiv Post, citing the company’s press service, reported that two people were killed and 13 workers and contractors sustained injuries in the attack.
Search and rescue operations were underway at the facility, involving firefighters, emergency responders and medical personnel.
The damage affected critical energy and blast furnace production infrastructure, forcing the company to partially suspend operations. Specialists were assessing the extent of the damage and determining the timeline for repairs.
The plant is a major civilian industrial facility and an important part of Ukraine’s economy. It was also targeted by a Russian missile strike in 2022, which destroyed a rolling mill and killed one worker.
