New Delhi, Sept 19: Three people have been arrested for allegedly supplying and using mule bank accounts to facilitate cyber fraud, with police recovering three mobile phones and a car from their possession, officials said on Saturday.
The case came to light after a resident of Mainpuri was allegedly duped of Rs 47,971 in a fake refund scam.
According to police, the complainant had placed an online order for dry fruits after seeing an advertisement on social media. He was later contacted by fraudsters through an online messaging platform, who claimed that the order could not be delivered and offered a refund.
Following their instructions, the victim allegedly lost Rs 47,971 from his bank account.
During the investigation, police traced the money trail to a bank account in Trilokpuri registered in the name of Sunny, 19.
Police alleged that Sunny had provided his bank account to receive proceeds of cyber fraud in exchange for a commission. His mobile phone was also seized and is being examined for chats, account-related information and other digital evidence.
Further analysis of bank records, ATM withdrawal details, mobile data and the movements of the suspects led investigators to Zaid, 26, and Ghani Khan, 31.
The two were allegedly involved in collecting and transporting bank account-opening kits, ATM cards and other account-related material from Delhi for use in the cyber fraud network.
Police arrested Zaid and Ghani Khan near Nizamuddin. A white car allegedly used by them to travel to Delhi and collect the account-opening kits and other materials was also seized.
The three accused have been sent to judicial custody.
Police said further investigation is underway to identify additional mule accounts, trace the complete flow of the defrauded money and establish the involvement of other members of the alleged network.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
