Statehood Restoration Our Solemn Commitment, NC Won’t Back Down: Sakina Itoo

BARAMULLA, Aug 3: Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Health and Education Sakina Itoo on Monday reiterated the National Conference’s commitment to the restoration of statehood, while announcing several welfare measures for women, Anganwadi workers and other vulnerable sections. Addressing a public outreach programme in Baramulla, Itoo said the Omar Abdullah-led government remains committed to improving the welfare of Anganwadi workers and helpers. She announced that the government has prepared a Cabinet proposal to provide compassionate appointments to a family member of a deceased Anganwadi worker without the need for fresh advertisement. “The contribution of our Anganwadi workers is invaluable. We are aware that they receive very little compared to the work they do, and we are making every effort to address their concerns,” she said. The minister added that the government is also working to relax the age criteria for contractual workers and ensure that employment remains within the family of a deceased worker. Referring to the long-pending demand for statehood, Itoo said the National Conference would continue its struggle until Jammu and Kashmir regains its full statehood. “We still call Jammu and Kashmir a state and will continue to do so until statehood is restored. It is our solemn commitment, and we will not back down,” she said. The minister also announced that financial assistance for the marriage of poor women has been increased from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000, while pensions for widows and senior citizens have been enhanced. She said the government has introduced free education for girls up to Class 12 to reduce school dropout rates. Itoo also directed officials to intensify awareness campaigns so that eligible beneficiaries can fully avail themselves of government welfare schemes.
