Statehood Cannot Hide Governance Failures: LoP Sunil Sharma

BARAMULLA, SEPT 16: Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Wednesday accused the National Conference-led government of failing to effectively utilise the powers and resources available to it, alleging that the Statehood issue was being used to deflect attention from governance-related concerns.

Addressing reporters in Baramulla, Sharma alleged that corruption had increased and said the youth were facing growing concerns over employment opportunities. He claimed that the government had sufficient responsibilities and resources but was not delivering effectively on the ground.

“Let them pave the way for us. We will show how to work. They have the work, but they are not using it,” Sharma said while criticising the functioning of the government.

The LoP also raised concerns over employment, alleging that jobs were increasingly being filled through outsourcing. He said the opposition would continue to highlight issues affecting different sections of society, including NHM employees, daily wagers and Anganwadi workers.

Sharma further alleged that funds released by the Centre were not being utilised effectively at the ground level. He also linked the issue to the delay in conducting Panchayati Raj Institutions and Urban Local Body elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

The opposition leader also criticised the government over electricity tariffs, alleging that increased power charges had placed an additional financial burden on consumers.

Sharma said the opposition would continue to raise public concerns and question the government over its performance both inside the Legislative Assembly and through other democratic platforms.
