JAMMU: The State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) J&K organised a one-day technical workshop titled Organ Donation – A Life Salience” at Tawi Conference Hall, Convention Centre, Canal Road, Jammu, under the year-long campaign of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, Angdaan Karo Jug Jug Jiyo.
The workshop was aimed at creating awareness about organ donation and transplantation and strengthening the understanding of healthcare professionals regarding the clinical, technical, medico-legal and ethical aspects of deceased organ donation.
The programme was graced by Dr. Anil Kumar, Director, National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), New Delhi, as the Chief Guest, while Dr. Poonam Sethi, Director Health Services, Jammu,
Dr. Vijay Tadia, Nodal Officer, ROTTO (North), Chandigarh; Dr. Ashok Sharma, HOD Ophthalmology, GMC Jammu were the Guests of Honour.
Dr. Elias Sharma, Nodal Officer, SOTTO J&K & HOD Urology, GMC Jammu presented the welcome address while Dr Poonam Mahajan, Joint Director, SOTTO J&K presented the vote thanks.
The programme was attended by CMOs, BMOs and medical professionals from across the Jammu Division, who actively participated in the technical sessions and deliberations on various aspects of organ donation and transplantation.
The technical session covered a wide range of important topics, including the scenario of organ donation and transplantation in India, evolution of organ donation in the North, evolution of SOTTO J&K, cornea donation, brain-stem death certification, maintenance of potential donors, medico-legal aspects of deceased organ donation, the burden of CKD in India, kidney paired exchange, and the sequence of events following cadaveric donation and counselling.
The sessions were delivered by eminent experts from NOTTO New Delhi, ROTTO North, PGIMER Chandigarh GMC Jammu, SSH Jammu and the Command Hospital(NC) Udhampur providing participants with valuable insights into the practical and technical aspects of organ donation and transplantation.
The programme emphasized the importance of early identification of potential donors, timely brain-stem death certification, effective donor maintenance, family counselling and coordinated efforts among healthcare professionals to increase the availability of organs for transplantation.
The programme concluded with a message encouraging greater public participation in organ donation and collective efforts towards building a stronger culture of organ donation in Jammu & Kashmir.
