JAMMU, Aug 27: Six people, including two women, were killed and three others injured when a vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a ditch in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.
The accident occurred at Seri Chouhana village in the Sheldhar area of Surankote. One of the injured, a child, was reported to be in critical condition.
Poonch Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Sharma said six persons died on the spot, while three others sustained injuries. A rescue operation was launched immediately following the accident, and the injured were shifted to hospital for treatment.
Chief Medical Officer Poonch, Dr Pervez Khan, said information about the accident was received through the Police Control Room, following which 108 ambulances, additional ambulances and other emergency resources were dispatched to the site.
The bodies of the deceased—four men and two women—were taken to the District Hospital. Officials said the victims were aged between 20 and 25 years.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the tragic accident and directed the district administration to provide immediate assistance to the affected families and injured.
