Srinagar, September 24: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has informed the Legislative Assembly that more than 12.89 lakh farmers have been covered under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and the Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme since 2017-18.
GeographicReferenceAccording to data presented in the House, the two crop insurance schemes are being implemented across all 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir, with 12,89,917 farmers covered so far.
The government said a total of 6.86 lakh hectares of agricultural land was brought under insurance coverage between 2017-18 and 2025-26. During this period, 3,72,134 crop insurance claims were settled, with compensation amounting to ₹221.71 crore.
The information was provided by the Minister in charge of Agriculture Production in response to questions raised by MLAs Farooq Ahmed Shah, Irfan Hafiz Lone and Ghulam Mohi Ud Din Mir.
The government said around 13.985 lakh farmer families are eligible to avail benefits under the schemes, subject to the prescribed guidelines and eligibility criteria. The schemes are demand-driven and open to all eligible farmer families in the Union Territory.
The highest participation was recorded during the Kharif 2025-26 season, when 2,01,480 farmers were covered across all 20 districts.
During the same season, 93,680 crop insurance claims were settled, with compensation of ₹54.80 crore disbursed to farmers.
The government further stated that PMFBY coverage, which was previously limited to selected districts, has now been extended across Jammu and Kashmir, expanding access to crop insurance for farmers facing losses due to adverse weather conditions and crop damage.
