UDHAMPUR, Aug 14: A man was killed and another seriously injured after a Village Defence Committee (VDC) member allegedly opened fire at them in the Moungri area of Udhampur district on Friday, officials said.
According to a senior police officer, the incident took place in the morning when the two men were travelling towards Damnot Police Post. An argument reportedly broke out between them during the journey, following which the accused allegedly opened fire.
One of the victims died in the incident, while the other sustained serious injuries and was taken for medical treatment.
The deceased was identified as Baldev Singh, son of Karta Singh, while the injured person was identified as Romesh Singh, son of Nak Ram.
“All the persons involved in the incident are members of the VDC,” the officer said.
Police have taken cognisance of the incident and initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the firing. Further details are awaited.
