Srinagar, September 21: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday inaugurated a National Seminar on the Millets Mission, focusing on promoting sustainable agriculture, healthy diets and resilient food systems in the Union Territory.
Addressing the gathering, Sinha said the initiative is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Shree Anna” and aims to strengthen climate-resilient farming, support small and marginal farmers, encourage women-led entrepreneurship and revive traditional nutritious food practices.
He highlighted the growing importance of millets in addressing challenges related to health, food security and environmental sustainability.
“Millets are not merely crops but they are instruments of health, sustainability, and self-reliance,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
Sinha stressed the need to adopt sustainable agricultural practices that can withstand changing climatic conditions while creating better livelihood opportunities for farmers and rural communities.
He also emphasised the importance of strengthening local food systems and promoting women-led enterprises to generate economic opportunities at the grassroots level.
Calling for collective efforts, the Lieutenant Governor said the benefits of millet cultivation, processing and nutrition should reach villages across Jammu and Kashmir.
“Let us together ensure that every plate carries nourishment and every village carries hope,” he said.
The national seminar brings together experts, agricultural stakeholders and other participants to discuss the potential of millets in improving nutrition, promoting sustainable farming, strengthening climate resilience and supporting rural economic development in Jammu and Kashmir.
