J&K Govt Clears ₹5.78 Cr Restoration Project for Lah Wali Bowli

SRINAGAR, Aug 11: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has sanctioned ₹5.78 crore for the comprehensive restoration and preservation of the historic Lah Wali Bowli in Rajouri, in a major initiative to safeguard the region’s architectural and cultural heritage.

The project envisages restoration of the historic stepwell and its associated architectural elements while preserving its original character, cultural significance and heritage value.

Officials said the restoration is also aimed at enhancing the site’s tourism potential and developing it as a heritage attraction, which could boost visitor footfall, support the local economy and highlight Rajouri’s rich historical legacy.

The approval forms part of the Government’s broader heritage conservation programme under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, focused on restoring and revitalising historically and culturally significant sites across Jammu and Kashmir.

In recent months, the Government has approved several heritage conservation projects in both Jammu and Kashmir divisions. These include the repair and renovation of Rattan Garh Fort in Bhaderwah, Doda; restoration and renovation of Ziyarat Sharief Khiram; repair and renovation of the historic Shiv Mandir at Thajiwara in Bijbehara; and restoration and revival of the historic Purmandal heritage site in Samba.

Other projects include conservation and upgradation of Imambara Zadibal in Srinagar, development of the revered holy spring of Khoo Sahib at Yarwan in Pulwama, restoration of the historic Jamia Masjid Sharief in Shopian and restoration of the Sarvadhar Chaumanda Mata Mandir in Ramban.

The Government’s heritage conservation initiative seeks to preserve Jammu and Kashmir’s architectural legacy and cultural diversity while integrating important heritage sites into the region’s broader tourism and cultural development plans.

The restoration of Lah Wali Bowli is expected to give the historic site a renewed identity and strengthen its potential as a heritage destination, while ensuring that its cultural and architectural legacy is preserved for future generations.
