THIMPHU, SEPTEMBER 17: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has reaffirmed India’s commitment to Bhutan’s development and progress, stressing the importance of the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
Jaishankar is on a two-day official visit to Bhutan from September 16-17, during which he has held discussions with Bhutanese Foreign Minister Lyonpo D.N. Dhungyel on development cooperation, energy, trade, connectivity, culture and people-to-people ties.
During his visit, Jaishankar and Dhungyel jointly participated in several development initiatives. These included the foundation stone laying for the 500-kW Lunana Hydropower Project in Gasa, the inauguration of the 65-bed Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Mother and Child Hospital in Mongar and the inauguration of the 80-metre Jaganathan Bridge in Samdrup Jongkhar.
The External Affairs Minister also handed over 43 pureline Jersey cows from India for Bhutan’s dairy cattle breeding programme. The initiative is aimed at improving milk productivity and supporting local farmers, with the breeding programme expected to benefit around 40,000 farmers.
The visit reflects the continued focus on India-Bhutan cooperation across infrastructure, healthcare, energy, agriculture and connectivity. India and Bhutan have maintained regular high-level exchanges aimed at strengthening their bilateral relationship and development partnership.
Jaishankar is also scheduled to receive a royal audience with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and call on Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay during his visit.
The engagements come as the two countries continue to expand cooperation in areas including hydropower, connectivity, trade and development assistance.
