JAMMU, SEP 20: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday laid the foundation stones for projects worth nearly ₹14 crore aimed at restoring and developing the heritage and religious sites of Purmandal and Uttervehini.
The projects include ₹7.15 crore for the renovation, restoration and revival of ancient heritage sites at Purmandal and ₹6.85 crore for restoration and related development works at the sacred Uttervehini site.
Addressing the gathering, LG Sinha said heritage conservation was not merely about restoring old structures but about preserving the cultural and historical identity of the region for future generations.
He said the ancient temples, stone carvings, ponds and other structures at Purmandal reflect the area's rich architectural and spiritual heritage, much of which has deteriorated over time.
Sinha said the old Lakshmi Narayan Temple, old Shiva Temple, old Ram Temple at Purmandal and historic temple complexes at Uttervehini would be restored using modern conservation techniques while retaining traditional architectural features.
The Lieutenant Governor said the restoration would also strengthen spiritual and cultural tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. Improved roads, pathways, lighting and other infrastructure would help connect the sites with major religious destinations, including Mata Vaishno Devi, Shiv Khori, Raghunath Temple and Baba Amarnath Ji.
He highlighted the economic potential of heritage tourism, saying increased visitor footfall could benefit local handicrafts, hospitality, homestays, transport services and food businesses, while creating employment opportunities for youth and new markets for artisans and small entrepreneurs.
Sinha said preserving cultural heritage was as important as building modern infrastructure in the journey towards a developed India.
He also reiterated his commitment to improving road connectivity to Purmandal and Uttervehini.
The Lieutenant Governor appreciated the Samba district administration for providing land for the proposed Mata Devika Ved Pathshala at Purmandal. He said funds for its construction would soon be sanctioned through the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.
On the occasion, Sinha also launched the GCC Gurha Slathia magazine.
Several elected representatives, senior government officials, religious leaders, prominent citizens, youth and devotees attended the foundation stone-laying ceremony.
