BJP Walks Out of J&K Assembly Over Discussion on Statehood Resolution

SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 29: BJP legislators staged a walkout from the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, protesting the Speaker’s decision to allow discussion on the resolution seeking restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory.

The BJP members objected to references in the resolution to earlier Assembly resolutions passed in 2000 and 2024, particularly those concerning autonomy and special status. The party has said it supports restoration of statehood but has opposed the language and references to the pre-2019 constitutional position.

Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma raised repeated objections during the proceedings and also sought action against Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather over the conduct of the House. The BJP legislators continued their protest before eventually walking out as the Assembly proceeded with the discussion and voting process.

The resolution, moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, was passed by the Assembly on Monday amid protests by BJP members. It calls upon the Government of India for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

The proceedings witnessed heated exchanges between ruling and Opposition members, reflecting differences over the wording of the resolution and references to Jammu and Kashmir’s earlier constitutional status.
