Switzerland Reach FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals for First Time Since 1954 After Penalty Shootout Win Over Colombia
VANCOUVER, JULY 9 : Switzerland held their nerve in a tense penalty shootout to defeat Colombia 4-3 after a goalless draw following extra time, booking their place in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since hosting the tournament in 1954. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was the hero for Switzerland, saving Cristian Hernández’s penalty, while Ruben Vargas converted the decisive spot-kick to secure the victory after a dramatic shootout at BC Place in Vancouver. The win set up a high-profile quarterfinal clash between Switzerland and Argentina in Kansas City. Colombia were the more attacking side throughout the match and created several promising opportunities, especially in extra time. Jhon Lucumí came closest to breaking the deadlock when his effort struck the crossbar, while Jhon Arias missed a golden chance in the 116th minute, firing over the bar with only Kobel to beat. Led by captain Granit Xhaka and defender Manuel Akanji, Switzerland’s defence remained solid despite struggling to create clear scoring chances of their own. The match moved to penalties after 120 minutes without a goal. Juan Fernando Quintero gave Colombia an early advantage, but Xhaka quickly responded for Switzerland. Colombia’s hopes took a hit when Davinson Sánchez hit the crossbar with his penalty. Both teams continued to trade successful spot-kicks before Akanji missed for Switzerland, giving Colombia a chance to recover. However, Kobel’s crucial save from Hernández shifted the momentum back in Switzerland’s favour. Cedric Itten scored for Switzerland, Luis Díaz kept Colombia alive, but Vargas calmly finished the final penalty to send his team into the last eight. The defeat marked another heartbreaking penalty shootout exit for Colombia, following their elimination by England in the Round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup. For Switzerland, the victory marked a historic milestone as they reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 72 years. They will now face Argentina with a place in the semifinals at stake.
