Mayawati says BSP candidate selection for 2027 UP polls underway

Lucknow, Aug 19: BSP supremo Mayawati on Wednesday said preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections were underway, including strengthening the party's support base across sections of society and selecting candidates, as she announced a key election-related responsibility for Satish Chandra Mishra.

In a post on X, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said the BSP was working at the grassroots level to expand its support among "sarv samaj" (all sections of society) and had begun the process of selecting candidates and announcing their names at assembly-level workers' conferences.

"The process of strengthening the BSP's base among all sections of society on the ground, as well as selecting party candidates and announcing their names at the party's assembly-level workers' conferences, is underway," she said.

"This has caused considerable restlessness among rival parties, and it is natural that continuous changes will now take place in the ruling BJP and other opposition parties," she added.

Mayawati said the BSP had also begun fielding Brahmin candidates as part of its preparations to form a majority government in the state on the lines of 2007.

"Since the BSP started giving representation to the Brahmin community, in particular, among all sections of society by making them BSP candidates, in line with preparations to form a BSP government with a full majority like in 2007, it is clear that this has led to both discussion and concern among the ruling BJP and other rival parties," she said.

She cautioned members of the "bahujan samaj" to remain alert to what she described as the tactics of rival parties. "People belonging to the 'bahujan samaj' need to remain continuously aware and vigilant about the tactics being adopted by these parties," Mayawati said.

On Mishra, Mayawati said the party's national general secretary and senior advocate had been assigned an expanded role covering Election Commission-related matters in addition to his existing responsibilities.

"Satish Chandra Mishra ji, who has been the BSP's national general secretary for a long time, senior advocate, former advocate general of Uttar Pradesh during the BSP government, several-time chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council, Cabinet minister in the BSP government and several-time BSP Rajya Sabha member, has now been entrusted by the party with the important responsibility of handling Election Commission-related matters, along with legal and media affairs," she said.

She said Mishra's role would be particularly important during the upcoming Assembly elections. "His role will be important in many ways, especially during the forthcoming Assembly general elections," Mayawati said.
