“I Am Not Gandhi, Be Your Own Hero”: Sonam Wangchuk Continues Indefinite Fast Amid CJP Protest
New Delhi, July 11: Climate activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk on Saturday said he is an ordinary citizen and not a “modern Gandhi” or a hero, urging people to take responsibility for their own actions and become the heroes of their own lives. The Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar entered its 22nd day, while Wangchuk continued his indefinite hunger strike for the 14th day over alleged examination irregularities. According to a health update shared by the organisation, Wangchuk has lost 7.5 kg since beginning the fast, with his blood pressure recorded at 106/74 mm Hg. He said he was feeling slightly less energetic but remained committed to the protest. In a video message, Wangchuk thanked supporters and expressed discomfort over being compared to Mahatma Gandhi or being called a hero. “I am neither Gandhi nor a hero. I am just an ordinary citizen who has tried to fulfil his responsibilities,” he said, urging people not to depend on others for change. Wangchuk appealed to citizens to participate in the movement and join the proposed march to Parliament on July 20. He encouraged people who cannot reach Delhi to show support from their respective locations. The activist also reiterated that his hunger strike was voluntary and said removing him from the protest site would violate his constitutional right to peaceful protest. The CJP has been demanding action over alleged examination irregularities, resignation of officials, and compensation for families of students who allegedly died by suicide. The protest began on June 20, while Wangchuk joined the agitation on June 28.
