NEW DELHI, July 15: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a ₹62,500-crore outlay for the second phase of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for mobile phone manufacturing, aimed at strengthening domestic production and boosting exports. Announcing the decision, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Cabinet had cleared the Mobile PLI 2.0 scheme to further expand India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem. According to the government, smartphones emerged as India’s top export commodity in calendar year 2025, with exports worth ₹2.62 lakh crore, led by strong shipments from Apple and its manufacturing partners. The government said India has become the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, with production rising from ₹2.14 lakh crore in FY 2019-20 to over ₹5.5 lakh crore in FY 2024-25. Mobile phone exports have also recorded significant growth, increasing nearly eight-fold from ₹27,000 crore in FY 2019-20 to ₹2 lakh crore in FY 2024-25. The Centre said India has transformed from a mobile phone importer in 2014 into a net exporter, with more than 300 mobile manufacturing units currently operating across the country.
