AMRITSAR, SEP 20: A man allegedly involved in the killing of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was killed in a police encounter in Amritsar, officials said.
The deceased, identified as Deepak Singh, a resident of Mulechak village, was allegedly one of two motorcycle-borne suspects who shot dead ASI Harjit Singh at the Bhagtanwala grain market during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
Police said the accused was traced with the help of CCTV footage, technical inputs, tower-dump analysis, local intelligence and human sources.
According to officials, police teams signalled two suspects travelling on a scooter to stop at a checkpoint around 9:45 pm on Saturday. One of the suspects allegedly opened fire at the police team before fleeing towards another checkpoint.
At the subsequent checkpoint, the suspects allegedly fired four rounds at the police, following which officers returned fire in self-defence.
During the exchange of fire in the Islamabad police station area, Deepak Singh sustained firearm injuries. He was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries, police said.
The second suspect managed to escape from the spot, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest him.
Police said they recovered one pistol, two magazines and eight cartridges from the scene.
