The truck crashed into several devotees and roadside shops before hitting the temple's entrance gate and bringing down a wall.

Located about 20 km from the district headquarters, the 125-year-old shrine attracts lakhs of devotees during Navratri, many of whom walk barefoot to offer prayers.

The scale of the devastation has left eyewitnesses questioning how a heavy commercial vehicle managed to reach the crowded shrine, given that vehicle movement is strictly restricted during the festival, with a designated parking facility set up nearly a kilometre away to prevent congestion.

Saurabh, a devotee present near the spot, recalled the horror as the vehicle careened down the slope before anyone could react.

"The road near the temple was on a slope, and the truck came speeding down it. Nobody could understand what had happened. We realised the severity only when we heard people screaming," he said.

While Saurabh managed to move ahead, his brother was trapped.

Several others caught under the truck frantically struggled to pull themselves out, and some managed to do so, he said.

The ordeal dragged on as efforts were made to move the paddy-laden truck.

Five cranes were eventually deployed around 4 am to lift the overturned vehicle, Saurabh said, adding that police also arrived around the same time to assist in shifting the dead and injured to nearby hospitals.

For some families, however, the nightmare did not end with the rescue operation.

Kiran, who lost her 19-year-old son, alleged that the boy was still breathing after the accident, but police delayed shifting him to a private hospital, and the delay in transporting him to a government hospital ultimately cost him his life.

Gajendra Prajapati, who runs a shop selling puja paraphernalia near the shrine, said the impact was so sudden and violent that the immediate surroundings were engulfed in thick smoke and dust.

Angered by the accident, eyewitnesses demanded a thorough probe into how the truck reached the temple area despite restrictions on vehicular movement, calling for strict action against those responsible for the safety failure.

Explaining the sequence of events, Gwalior Collector Ruchika Chouhan said the truck had crashed through police barricades and barreled towards the temple grounds at high speed.

Two police personnel were also injured while attempting to stop the vehicle, she said, adding that the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has been directed to examine the truck.

The Madhya Pradesh government has announced an ex-gratia assistance of Rs 4 Commission deciding to provide "readable" electoral rolls to parties, the Congress on Sunday said it was the result of the whole nation being on the streets against the "vote chors" and pushed for its demands that the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar must go as well as the SIR be suspended forthwith.

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said that over the past two years the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and the Congress Party have been persistent, insistent and consistent in demanding that the Election Commission of India provide electoral rolls in searchable format to all political parties.

"The demand was repeatedly refused by the ECI which stopped providing searchable voter rolls in 2018 when the Congress found lakhs of bogus voters in Madhya Pradesh. The demand was denied for 8 years to enable Vote Chori," Ramesh said on X.

On October 15, 2026 the ECI issued an order that electoral rolls will be provided in searchable format to political parties for the Special Summary Revision (SSR), which resumed after a gap of two years in 17 states and UTs, he said.

"This is because the whole nation is on the streets against the Vote Chors," Ramesh claimed.

"Every time 'vote chori' is caught, the Modi government adopts a new tactic: stopping readable voter rolls, fake voter additions, SIR. But that alone will not be enough. The ECI itself along with its IT system has to be thoroughly revamped," he said.

The SIR, which has put the Constitutional right to vote for over 13 crore Indians at risk, has to be suspended forthwith, Ramesh said.

The Election Commission has ordered holding the annual special summary revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in 17 states and Union territories, including those where assembly polls are due "early next year".

The final rolls in these states and Union territories will be published on January 4.

A senior EC functionary explained that SSR is an annual exercise mandated under election law. It is specially held in poll-bound states.

In these 17 states, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voters' list has been completed. In Assam, a special revision instead of SIR had taken place due to legal reasons.

For the first time, parties will be shared with "readable" electoral rolls at draft and final stages in both He stressed that greater domestic and international investment, predictable demand, faster regulatory approvals and sustainable business models would be essential to scaling up Indian enterprises and expanding their presence in global markets.

The Minister participated in the Roundtable organised by the 'Bloomberg New Economy Forum', being held in New Delhi. The discussion examined how countries can translate sovereign Space capabilities into commercially competitive industries, attract private capital and develop stronger supply chains while safeguarding national interests. Participants also discussed the evolving global space economy, the role of international partnerships and the challenges of scaling up private space enterprises.

Among the other prominent participants were Vinod Kumar, Director (Promotion), Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe); and Aisha Bowe, Founder and CEO of STEMBoard and LINGO, former NASA engineer and Blue Origin astronaut. The session brought together representatives from the Space industry, entrepreneurship, academia and the international space community.

The Minister said the opening of India’s Space sector to private participation in 2019–2020 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi had produced significant results within just five to six years. India’s experience demonstrates the potential of bringing government institutions and private industry together in a sector that requires substantial technological expertise, investment and long-term commitment. The priority now, he said, is to convert these capabilities into commercially viable businesses with the scale to compete internationally.

Dr. Jitendra Singh stressed that generating demand is essential for the growth of private space companies. Referring to the Government’s use-case-based approach, he said anchor government customers and support for proof-of-concept projects can help enterprises demonstrate their technologies and move towards commercial deployment. A predictable customer base can give companies the confidence to invest in production, develop market-ready products and build sustainable revenue streams.

He also stressed the need for timely regulatory approvals, lower business costs and stronger supply-chain integration. Companies seeking installation or export licences should be able to obtain the necessary approvals within defined timeframes. Referring to GST-related measures for space products, the Minister said reforms must translate into practical benefits for industry. Investment becomes sustainable when businesses have predictable demand, efficient processes and a clear path to commercial growth.

On investment and international cooperation, the Minister said India is opening up opportunities for capital and partnerships while continuing to strengthen indigenous capabilities. Greater investment can support technology development, manufacturing and access to international markets, while domestic capabilities remain important for national security and strategic autonomy.

He called for stronger collaboration between Indian government institutions and private enterprises, complemented by partnerships with international counterparts. This approach can help Indian companies integrate into global supply chains, expand their customer base and contribute to the wider space economy without compromising national interests. The objective is to combine the strengths of public and private enterprises in India with the capabilities of partners abroad.

The Minister said India’s Space programme is distinguished not only by its achievements in space but also by the extensive use of space technology on Earth. Satellite communications, geospatial applications and Earth observation are supporting infrastructure development, project monitoring, agriculture, disaster management and defence.

Dr Jitendra Singh referred to the use of Space technology for project clearances, monitoring implementation timelines and geotagging development works. India is also providing space-based information and support for disaster management to neighbouring countries, including Myanmar, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. These applications demonstrate how investments in space capabilities can improve public services, support development and create opportunities for commercial applications.

The wider economic value of the Space sector, the Minister said, lies in connecting technological achievements with practical applications and the needs of citizens. Alongside launch vehicles and satellites, downstream services, data-driven solutions and industrial applications will be important in expanding the market for Indian space companies.

Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasised that national space capabilities and international cooperation need not be competing objectives. India must continue to build its own technological strengths while working with global partners to expand opportunities for its industry. Stronger domestic and international public-private partnerships can support investment, technology development, supply-chain integration and access to new markets.

The Minister also stressed the importance of remaining open to progressive ideas and adapting policies as technology and industry requirements evolve. The opening of the space sector to private participation reflects the value of enabling new players to contribute alongside established public institutions.

India’s next phase of space-sector growth will depend on turning technological strengths into commercially successful enterprises. Greater investment, predictable demand, efficient regulatory processes, indigenous capabilities and international partnerships will be central to this transition, positioning the country for a larger role in the global space economy.

India’s However, Lance Naik and Naik continue to remain operational ranks in the Indian Army.

Under the existing promotion structure, a CRPF constable may have to wait an average of 22 to 25 years for the first promotion, officials said. The force, which has approximately 3.25 lakh personnel, has been facing significant stagnation in its lower ranks, leading to dissatisfaction among jawans.

The proposed reintroduction of the two ranks is expected to provide additional promotion opportunities before personnel reach the head constable level. Officials believe the move could help address grievances and improve morale.

Agniveers Also in Focus

The proposal is also being considered in the context of making the CRPF more attractive to former Agniveers joining the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).

Agniveers are personnel recruited into the Army, Navy and Air Force for a four-year term under the Centre’s Agnipath scheme. The first batch is expected to begin completing its service tenure later this year, making eligible personnel available for recruitment into CAPFs, including the CRPF.

At present, the CAPFs have an interim arrangement under which some constables wear insignia corresponding to a senior constable-level designation similar to Lance Naik. However, there is no equivalent arrangement for the Naik rank.

Ranbir Singh, Secretary General of the Ex-Paramilitary Personnel Association, said the proposal would benefit personnel only if it resulted in time-bound promotions. Otherwise, he warned, the exercise could fail to address the underlying problem.

A senior CRPF commandant also stressed that restoring the ranks should not be merely a cosmetic change and must preserve discipline and operational efficiency within battalions.

The CRPF and the Border Security Force (BSF) had previously maintained these ranks on the lines of the Army’s infantry battalions.

Officials noted that CRPF battalions typically comprise more than 1,000 personnel, including over 20 subordinate officers. Any changes to the rank structure would therefore need to account for the existing hierarchy, regimentation and operational requirements of the force.

The proposal remains under consideration, with feedback from personnel expected to help determine the way forward.

New Delhi, Oct 17 : A Delhi court on Saturday issued bailable warrants against YouTuber Dhruv Rathee in a 2018 defamation case filed by a BJP IT Cell member after a process server reported that his house was locked while attempting to serve a summons notice.

Judicial Magistrate Rahul Jain issued the warrants in the case filed by Vikas Pandey, who accused Rathee of defamation over a video uploaded on his YouTube channel.

The detailed order is awaited.

The court has listed the matter for further proceedings on October 31.

The development comes days after the court issued fresh summons to Rathee on October 12, noting that the complainant had been trying to serve him for several years.
