According to Professor Khursheed, the species was introduced during the reign of Maharaja Gulab Singh, particularly in forest areas around Dachigam National Park and adjoining regions for hunting.

The species resurfaced in Kashmir in 2013, when three wild boars were reported in Dachigam, nearly three decades after the last sighting in 1984.

The ongoing study will initially examine the genetic relationship between the Kashmir population and wild boars in Jammu. Researchers will subsequently study the population genetics of wild boars across different parts of the Valley.

“We are going to see the population genetics—whether the populations in the north and south, as well as those in between, are mixing or remain separate,” Khursheed said.

The research is expected to determine whether wild boars found across Kashmir belong to a single interconnected population or comprise separate populations. It could also provide insights into gene flow, movement patterns and the factors driving the species’ expansion.

Khursheed said the university recently initiated the study and the genetic analysis is expected to take around five to six months. A population census is also planned, as the exact number of wild boars currently present in Kashmir is not known.

Wild boar incursions have been reported from several parts of the Valley. In Bandipora’s Ajas area, for instance, widespread incidents prompted the district administration to consult the wildlife department at SKUAST-K.

Experts informed the administration that the species was not native to Kashmir and could potentially be declared “vermin” under provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, which would permit measures to control its population.

However, Khursheed stressed that a scientific assessment of the population was necessary before any such action could be considered.

“If range expansion has happened, how it has happened and what factors are responsible for this expansion—we have to study that also,” he said.

He noted that wild boars are fast-breeding animals, with females capable of producing large litters. Camera-trap images have recorded as many as 14 young ones accompanying a female, highlighting the species’ potential to multiply rapidly.

Experts have also suggested that rising temperatures could be contributing to the species’ resurgence in Kashmir, as wild boars may previously have struggled to survive the Valley’s traditionally colder climatic conditions.

The genetic study is expected to provide scientific evidence about the origin, genetic connectivity and expansion of wild boars in Kashmir, while helping authorities assess their potential ecological and agricultural impact.

SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 4: Three short documentaries from filmmaker Bharatbala’s Virtual Bharat series have been selected for screening at the International Film Festival of Jammu & Kashmir (IFFJK) 2026, scheduled to be held from September 7 to 10 across Srinagar, Jammu and Gulmarg.

The selected films—Naqsh-e-Daur: The Story of Ghulam Nabi Dar, Taleem and Kunemechi: A Home Carved in Ancestry—highlight India’s traditional crafts, cultural heritage and stories of communities preserving their ancestral knowledge.

Naqsh-e-Daur and Taleem have been selected for the J&K Select Competition Section, while Kunemechi: A Home Carved in Ancestry will be screened in the Non-Competition Section.

Set in Srinagar’s Safakadal, Naqsh-e-Daur follows master craftsman Ghulam Nabi Dar, who has spent six decades carving Kashmir’s heritage into walnut wood. The matter has been listed for the prosecution’s response on September 19.

In his statement, Malik maintained that he had been falsely implicated in the case but said that, after “deep reflection” and Istikhara, a voluntary Islamic prayer seeking divine guidance, he had decided not to contest the proceedings further.

He, however, clarified that his decision should not be construed as an admission of guilt or an acceptance of the allegations levelled against him. At the same time, he requested the court to impose capital punishment.

The development follows the filing of a 737-page charge sheet by the State Investigation Agency (SIA) in June in connection with the abduction and killing of Sarla Bhat, who was working as a nurse at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) when she was abducted on April 18, 1990. Her body was later recovered from the Malabagh area on the outskirts of Srinagar.

The charge sheet names Malik and four others—Khurshid Ahmad Chalkoo, Abdul Hamid Sheikh, Mohammad Yousuf Sofi and Ghulam Mohammad Taploo—as accused in the case.

Malik has denied involvement in Bhat’s killing. In his submission, he claimed that he came to know about the murder months after it occurred while he was in judicial custody. He also questioned the prosecution’s reliance on an alleged handwritten JKLF note said to have been recovered from the crime scene.

He rejected allegations that Bhat had been targeted on suspicion of working as an informer for security forces, maintaining that she was an innocent civilian. Malik also questioned why his name did not figure in the investigation conducted at the time of the killing.

In a separate personal message included in the submission, Malik announced his decision to separate from his Pakistani wife, Mushaal Hussein Mullick.

According to reports, Malik said he did not want Mushaal to spend the rest of her life carrying the burden of his circumstances or living as his widow. He urged her to begin a new chapter of her life with “dignity and hope” and expressed his love and respect for her and their daughter, Raziya Sultana.

Malik also asked his daughter to remain in regular contact with her grandmother in Kashmir, including speaking to her for at least five minutes every day, the report said.

Malik and Mushaal married in Pakistan in 2009 and have a daughter.

The proceedings in the Sarla Bhat case are separate from Malik’s conviction in the 2017 terror-funding case. Steering Committee (UTHPSC) in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday approved three major urban development projects worth nearly Rs 2700 crore.

The projects identified by the Housing and Urban Development Department (H&UDD) include TARANG (Tawi Area Regeneration and Green Growth) in Jammu, Walled City and Nigeen Lakefront Revitalisation in Srinagar, and KRIPA (Katra Revitalisation Through Integrated Pilgrimage Amenities) in Reasi are designed to combine public investment with market-linked financing and private participation to create modern, sustainable and economically vibrant urban spaces, an official spokesperson said.

"In a major step towards accelerating sustainable and investment-driven urban transformation in J&K, the UTHPSC, chaired by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, has approved three major urban development projects with a cumulative base cost of Rs 2,692.58 crore under the Government of India's Urban Challenge Fund (UCF)," the official said.

The approval marks a significant advancement in J-K's efforts to leverage the UCF framework for transformative urban infrastructure, while unlocking additional institutional, municipal and private capital for large-scale development, the spokesperson said.

With an estimated cost of Rs 1,567.91 crore, TARANG envisages comprehensive regeneration of the Tawi riverfront and the surrounding urban areas through a combination of public infrastructure and PPP-led commercial development.

The project has a funding structure comprising Rs 307.05 crore each from the Centre and the UT government, while Rs 953.81 crore is proposed to be mobilised through market and PPP financing.

The PPP component will facilitate development of a high-end residential group housing project, an upscale hotel, a modern retail mall and associated Left Bank road infrastructure.

The project also provides for extensive structural and river-protection work, including a diaphragm wall, embankment filling, retaining wall with anchor slabs and interceptor drainage infrastructure.

The Walled City and Nigeen Lakefront Revitalisation project, with an estimated cost of Rs 1,010 crore, seeks to rejuvenate Srinagar's historic urban core and unlock the economic potential of its lakefront areas in the interiors of the historical city.

Around Rs 300 crore will be deployed towards core public infrastructure and revitalisation of the historic city, while the PPP component will support development of a Hospitality Centre, Pokribal Lakefront and a premium
